7th grade

Hello All!

I hope your new year has been peaceful.  Tomorrow (February 2nd) your student has a math test.  Please be sure they bring their calculator!
Best,
Ms. Jennew logo apple with leavesNovember 18, 2016

Hello Algebra 2 parents!

My original goal had been for students not to have homework over their week off, but a number of students have not reached their Khan Academy goal.
To clarify: students are expected to complete 5% every two weeks.  Most students HAVE NOT been working enough on Khan Academy to reach this and that is affecting their grade in my class.  So, homework.
All Algebra 2 students are expected to be at 15% completion by November 28th–that’s the day we get back. I suggest starting now and doing a bit every day and not slamming it all out on Sunday the 27th.
Let me know if you have any questions about this,
Ms. Jen

Hi Pre-Algebra Parents,

Due to overwhelming peer pressure and what people have said is ease of use, I have begun to set up Google Classroom.
The code for your student and you to use to join the class is: zfsuxt
I will do my best to get this up and running as quickly as possible.
Thanks,
Ms. Jen

Hello Parents!

I just wanted to let you know that I informed your students of my new grading policy regarding late work today in class and it begins this week.
If an assignment is 1 day late a point will be taken off and that work will not be eligible for regrading. This will drop maximum grade from a 5 (which is an 8 in the IB system) to a 4 (which is a 4 in the IB system).
If an assignment is 2 days late 2 points will be taken off and that work will not be eligible for regrading. This will drop maximum grade from a 5 (which is an 8 in the IB system) to a 3 (which is a 1 in the IB system).
If an assignment is 3 days late 3 points will be taken off and that work will not be eligible for regrading. This will drop maximum grade from a 5 (which is an 8 in the IB system) to a 2 (which is a 0 in the IB system).
I believe I make my due dates reasonable and most work seems to come in late because students are either:
1. not utilizing their time wisely in class.  I try to manage this, but I do let students work together during class and I remind them over and over to get their work done while interacting
2. not utilizing the tutoring time I have available: Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 to 4:00
3. not doing homework when the above two options have been exhausted.
We have an accelerated program here at CIS and while I don’t always assign homework, I expect it to be completed when I do. Grades are always available on Powerschool; I update them as quickly as I can and I realized that I am slowed greatly by late work, so I believe this will fix the problem of timely updates.  If you have any questions about your student’s progress please feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
Ms. Jen

Dear Parents,

You student has a math test on Thursday, therefore they will need to bring their calculator because we DO NOT have enough for all students.
One parent has weighed in on calculators.  Here are his thoughts:
From my experience it is advisable to warn parents that calculators with Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) and the TI 89 series are not allowed on ACT, SAT, and state wide tests.
I understand that the TI-30Xa is an adequate calculator for now. In High School graphing calculators are required. If parents buy now the TI-30 they will have to buy another calculator later.
The TI-Nspire is a much better calculator than the TI 83/84 series. I know that the Nspire is a rather “new” product. My experience as math teacher at Sue Cleveland was, the first two years I was able to organize that all “my” students got a free rental from the school. The middle school teachers did not want to use them… . Then suddenly all other teacher of “higher” Mathematics wanted to have these calculators in their classroom, too. The word spread that the Nspire is far superior to the other typical ones used and the students loved them.
In my opinion, the earlier the students learn to use one type of calculator the better they will be able to use it. The “normal” 10,000 hours of training before true mastery may apply also in this case.
I hope this is helpful information,
Ms. Jen

Hello, Parents!

We have just finished the first quarter of school!  Your student’s semester grade will be the average of their first quarter grade and their second quarter grade. So if they didn’t do as well as you would have liked them to, there is still hope!
If your student earned a C or below, your assumption should be that they have homework every night.  Most of the C or below grades were earned because students didn’t complete assignments or rework incorrect problems.  We have assignments in progress this week and grades will be updated by Friday.  I hope you will review your student’s progress on Powerschool on a regular basis with them and contact me with questions.
Lastly, we do not have enough calculators for every student.  On the supply list for your student Ms. Flores and I recommended the TI-30Xa calculator, as that is the one we use at school, but whatever calculator you wish your student to use is fine.  They just need their own calculator if they don’t already have one.
Thank you,
Ms. Jen

Hello all my 7th grade parents!

I think I have my email list complete now!
I just wanted to let you know a couple of things before the long weekend and the end of the quarter are upon us:
1. The end of the quarter is 10/14 and all of my grading must be in by that date, which means I will need any corrections and/or missing work by 10/11–which is the day we all return, rested and ready for the quiz!
2. There is a quiz on Tuesday, 10/11.  It will include the review topics of interior angles of polygons and exterior angles of triangles, as well as all the angle worksheets we have been working on.
3. I allow students to make corrections on work that is not 5 out of 5, so this weekend would be a good time for them fix things–as fixing things gets it right in their brain as well as on the page–and to study for the quiz.
4.  My 5 point system breaks down into the IB grading system in the following way:
5      =      8  (100%)
4.75  =      7  (93%)
4.5    =     6   (87%)
4.25  =      5  (83%)
4       =      4  (77%)
3.75  =      3  (73%)
3.5    =      2  (67%)
3       =      1  (57%)
below 3 = 0
This allows me to give more smaller assignments as the students are assimilating the information and then tests weigh out a little less heavily.
5.  I hope you will please check Powerschool  and talk to with your student about any zeroes or anything that is less than 5.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Jen

Hello 7th grade parents,

We had our 2nd quiz this week and the grades are in.  There are a couple of concepts I’m going to go over in class on Monday and then let students correct their mistakes for half credit.
If your student is receiving a C, again, I suggest that your student attend tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4
Have a great weekend,
Ms. Jen

Hello!

I wanted to let you know that grades are updated on Powerschool so you can check your student’s progress.  If your student has a C or less, I suggest they come for tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:00 until that grade is higher.
For assignments that are labeled homework, students make rework problems to raise their grade.  I encourage this because fixing them on the page helps to right the thinking in their brain.  A lot of learning comes from fixing mistakes– in life as well as in school!
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Jen

Hello,

I’m Ms. Jen and I’m your student’s math teacher this year.  Thank you for your patience while I am sorting out the grading system–grades will be visible by the end of this week.
Tutoring begins tomorrow and will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:00.
However, your student is doing well in their math class and will not need tutoring this week.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Have a great week,
Jennew logo apple with leaves
