Third Grade Teacher – Maestra Monica Saenz
saenzm@corralesis.org
I was born and raised in Raton, NM where I lived most of my life. My parents migrated to the U.S from Mexico just a few years before I was born. I had the amazing privilege of spending my childhood summers at my grandparents ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico, playing in the river, running through the rocky hills looking for lizards and shiny rocks, baking with my grandmother, and working in the corn fields with my grandfather. Due to the language barrier, my first years in school were quite difficult, and oftentimes came with a lot of unexpected challenges, but my love for learning was greater than those challenges. It wasn’t long before I learned the English language and eventually developed a love for reading. As a young girl in elementary school, I often told my sisters that “one day” I, too, would become a teacher. Thirty plus years later, here I am – a teacher. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in my 10+ years in the field of education is that children want to know how much you truly care, before you can teach them all there is to know. My move to Albuquerque seven years ago confirmed my love for this profession and I am now delighted to be part of a community like Corrales International School.
